Spartanburg, S.C. –
Chawnee Gulick and Cassie Elmore each scored goals to give the Jacksonville Dolphins a 2-0 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team in conference play Friday evening from County University Soccer Stadium.

Upstate falls to 2-12-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the conference, while Jacksonville improves to 4-7-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in league play.

The Spartans came out of the gate quick in the first half as they had three scoring chances within the first nine minutes of play. Hailey Venable and Kate Winegarner looked to put Upstate on the scoreboard first in the 4th and 7th minutes, but JU goalie Sara Wicks denied each the opportunity with a pair of saves. In the 9th minute, Alexa Hone's shot inside the 18-yard box just missed the net as Wicks recorded another save.

Gulick capitalized for the Dolphins in the 13th minute as her first goal of the season gave them the 1-0 lead. The Spartans were unable to clear the ball from their side of the field as it deflected right to the feet of Gulick, who quickly put her attempt past Upstate goalie Ellen Bright for the first goal of the match.

Elmore extended JU's lead to 2-0 just as the match was entering the 57th minute for her second goal of the year. Elmore gained possession of the ball after receiving a pass from Kyra Cloutier just outside the 18-yard box. She took two dribbles to the right and placed her shot just by the diving Bright. Cloutier was credited with the assist.

Bright finished the match with nine saves and Haley Gethin posted a team-high three shots with two coming on-goal. Wicks turned in a six-save performance for the Dolphins and Elmore added six shots including five on-goal.

The Spartans held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks while Jacksonville led 17-10 in shots.

Upstate remains at home Sunday afternoon as it faces North Florida at 1 p.m.
