Upstate Edged by Kennesaw State 1-0 on Senior Day

Shannon Driscoll scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lift the Kennesaw State Owls to a 1-0 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team Sunday afternoon on Senior Day from County University Soccer Stadium.

Upstate drops to 3-13-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference, while Kennesaw State moves to 6-9-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in league play.

Driscoll received a through ball from 30 yards out on a pass by Cassidy Kemp at midfield, leaving her one-on-one with Spartan goalie Ellen Bright. She took several dribbles and made a move past Bright placing her shot into the open net giving the Owls the 1-0 lead. Kemp was credited with the assist on Driscoll's goal.

The first half featured a total of 14 shots by both teams as Kennesaw State attempted nine and the Spartans five. Bright logged six saves during the opening half and received help in the 34th minute as a header by Abby Roth was saved at the net by an Upstate defender. The Spartans looked to go up 1-0 twice just before halftime on attempts by India Kozel in the 44th minute and Nicki Krejci as the match entered the 45th minute. KSU goalie Ashley Zambetti held Upstate scoreless with a pair of saves.

The Owls tried to score the game-winner early in the second half with two shots in a six-second span. The initial header by Carly Pressgrove ended in a team save for the Spartans and Driscoll's follower was stopped by Bright.

Rachel Baylor posted back-to-back scoring chances for Upstate in the 70th minute of play. Baylor started her opportunities midway of the 70th minute, but her attempt went wide, and came back 10 seconds later with another from less than 10 yards in front of the goal that was saved by Zambetti.

Baylor led the Spartans offensively with two shots on the afternoon and was one of six players with an attempt on-goal. Bright finished with a career-high 12 saves as Upstate tallied 14 total against KSU.

Ida Hepsoe had a team-high five shots for the Owls with three coming on-goal. Zambetti added six saves in the net.

The Spartans wrap up their regular season Tuesday evening as they host South Carolina State at 7 p.m.
