Spartanburg, S.C. – Brittany Starling became the 15th player in USC Upstate history to reach 1,000 career points and Maddie Herr scored a career-high 20 points, but the Spartans would fall to the Northern Kentucky Norse 83-60 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon from the Hodge Center.
Upstate ends the regular season with a 14-15 overall record and 6-8 mark in the A-Sun, while Northern Kentucky improves to 17-12 on the season and 8-6 in conference play.
Herr finished the game shooting 6-of-13 overall including a 5-for-9 mark from three. Starling recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 16 points and tied for a game-high 11 rebounds. She is also the sixth player in program history to compile 1,000 points and 700 rebounds during their career. Sharmayne Edwards added 14 points.
Christine Roush had a game-high 26 points for NKU after going 8-for-14 from the field and Kaitlyn Gerrety contributed a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The opening four minutes saw the score tied twice with Edwards picking up four of the first seven points for the Spartans. Her jumper at the 16:07 mark evened the score at 7-7, but Roush put the Norse in front by three the following possession. Northern Kentucky would go ahead by five, 14-9, four minutes later on a layup by Faith Sanders.
After Edwards trimmed the score down to 14-11, the Norse broke the game open courtesy of a 17-0 run over a 4:53 stretch to increase its advantage to 31-11 with 4:34 left after Molly Franson's layup. Herr ended the run with her triple and added a jumper two possessions later to make the score 33-17 at the 3:57 mark. Upstate held NKU scoreless over the proceeding 4:08 as Clency trimmed its deficit to 33-22 with 12 seconds left. Kasey Uetrecht sent the Norse into halftime ahead 35-22 after her jumper with two seconds remaining.
Northern Kentucky began the second half scoring four straight points to push its lead to 39-22 less than two minutes in. Starling's three-point play with 14:15 remaining capped a quick 8-4 run for the Spartans and cut their deficit down to 50-40. The Norse answered with a 12-3 run of its own, covering a period of 3:37, to go back up 62-43 on Gerrety's layup.
NKU led by at least 17 for the next three minutes until it went in front 68-48 with 7:08 left. Upstate was able to cut the score down to 73-60 at the 2:22 mark after going on a 12-5 run with Starling recording seven of those points. The Norse scored eight of their final 10 points at the charity stripe with the last two by Mikayla Terry putting the final score at 83-60.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 19-for-59 (32.2%) overall and was 16-for-21 (76.2%) at the free-throw line. Northern Kentucky went 29-of-61 (47.5%) as a team and 17-of-22 (77.3%) at the free-throw line.
The first round of the 2015 A-Sun Women's Basketball Championship is scheduled for Friday, Mar. 6.
