Kennesaw, Ga. – Ty Greene scored 21 points and USC Upstate ran its winning streak to five with a 74-46 victory over Kennesaw State Saturday from the KSU Convocation Center.
Greene hit five three-pointers and has made 26 over his last five games and is shooting 54.3 percent during that stretch.
Fred Miller finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Josh Cuthbertson added 10 points to help Upstate become the first Spartan team since 2005-06 with two five-game winning streaks in the same season.
Yonel Brown led Kennesaw State with nine points, and Upstate held every player out of double figures for the first time since 2012. It's also the 13th time this season that the Spartans have held an opponent to fewer than 60 points.
USC Upstate built a quick 13-5 lead seven minutes into play as five different Spartans scored at least one basket. Kennesaw State followed with a 10-2 run to even the score at 15 before Upstate answered with a 16-0 run midway through the first half to open up a 31-15 lead.
Kennesaw State cut the deficit to nine late in the period, but a three-pointer from Cuthbertson and a dunk by Marvin Smith in the final minute pushed the lead up to 14 at halftime.
The Spartans opened the second half on a 14-0 run and went ahead 52-24 before Kennesaw State got a three-pointer from Brown. Upstate would go on to lead by as many as 32 points on its way to beating Kennesaw State for the eighth time in the last nine games.
Upstate shot 47.3 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point range and 100.0 percent from the free throw for the game.
Upstate returns to the court Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host North Florida from the Hodge Center.
