Miscues Costly in Upstate Loss at Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Fla. – Connor Marabell had two hits and had the game-winning home run to lead Jacksonville to a 3-1 victory over USC Upstate Friday in game two of a three-game series from Sessions Stadium.

Upstate starting pitcher Blake Whitney retired the first six Dolphins before Austin Hays led off the third inning with a single just under the glove of Jordan Ford at third base. Nathan Koslowski then reached on a fielder's choice and JJ Gould laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Centerfielder Parker Perez delivered with an RBI groundout to the right side to account for the first run.

Whitney settled in from there and sat down 10 of the next 11 hitters and finished with two earned runs allowed on four hits in 6.2 innings of work.  

Upstate pushed across a run in the sixth inning to pull even when Sam Kysor scored on a wild pitch by reliever Justin Russell. Kysor opened the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a groundout from Daniel Fickas.

Connor Marabell regained the lead with Jacksonville with a home run to right field to being the seventh inning. JJ Gould added an RBI single later in the inning to put the Dolphins ahead 3-1.

Russell pitched three innings in relief of starter Spencer Stockton and earned his third win of the season. Greg Shannahan logged the final two innings and struck out three and picked up the save.

Upstate and Jacksonville complete the series Saturday at 1 p.m. with right-handers Zac Manuppelli and Nathan Disch scheduled to draw the pitching assignments.
