Spartanburg, S.C. – Matthew Naylor pitched six scoreless innings in relief and North Florida scored six runs over the final three innings en route to an 8-2 victory over USC Upstate Friday in game one of a three-game series from Harley Park.
Naylor entered in the third inning and scattered five hits and struck out seven to pick up his seventh win of the season. Nick Miller pitched a perfect ninth to help the Ospreys extend their winning streak to nine.
Senior Dylan Parker (3-3) gave up five runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work and suffered the loss.
Upstate freshman Charlie Carpenter registered his team-leading 43rd RBI of the season in the first inning when he drove in Erik Samples with a sacrifice fly to put the Spartans out in front. Cody Brittain gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage in the second inning with an RBI single up the middle that scored Stephen Dowling.
North Florida answered in the third inning by scoring a run on a groundout by Donnie Dewees and a throwing error that tied the game.
The Ospreys loaded the bases in the seventh inning and used an RBI groundout by Patrick Ervin, a throwing error on the Upstate infield and an RBI single from Kyle Brooks to plate three runs and open up a 5-2 lead.
Corbin Olmstead hit his 12th home run of the season in the eighth inning before Trent Higginbothem and Keith Skinner added RBIs in the ninth to account for the final two Osprey runs.
Samples, Zach Krider, Stephen Dowling and J.J. Shimko each finished with two hits to lead Upstate. Carpenter tallied one hit to extend his hitting streak to a season-longest 13 games.
Upstate and North Florida continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m. with Blake Whitney matching up against Bryan Baker. Upstate will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game and honor Dowling, Parker, Samples and Tresco Shannon.
