Spartanburg, S.C. – Maddie Dawkins netted her first goal of the season to lead Penn to a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon in non-conference action from County University Soccer Stadium.
Sasha Stephens dribbled down the left sideline and delivered a pass into the Upstate box where a streaking Dawkins sent a one-timer into the Spartan goal to help the Quakers improve to 4-1-0.
Upstate keeper Ellen Bright collected eight saves and now leads the Atlantic Sun Conference with 49. The Fort Mill, S.C., native also paces the league with 6.1 saves per game.
"Penn is an incredible team that has some incredible athletes," USC Upstate assistant coach Leah Fortune said. "I thought our team responded to the challenge in a phenomenal way, and I thought our defense was fantastic both individually and collectively. We are looking forward to using this game as a learning experience moving towards conference play."
Spartan sophomore Carmen Alvarez turned in Upstate's best scoring chance in the 50th minute when she broke free from her defender, but Penn keeper Carrie Crook snared Alvarez's shot to keep the contest scoreless.
Upstate continues non-conference play Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to High Point, N.C., to face High Point from the Witcher Athletic Center.
