Spartans Hold on for Victory at Gardner-Webb

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Gordon Wild scored two goals and USC Upstate held off a second half rally en route to a 3-2 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday evening from Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Leon Schwarzer picked up his fifth goal of the year and started the scoring for the Spartans in the eighth minute. Wes Chambers picked up an assists on the play when his pass inside the Gardner-Webb box found Schwarzer for a shot to the far post.

Schwarzer played a part in Upstate's second goal as his pass in the 33rd minute allowed Wild to net his 11th goal of the year.

Wild put the Spartans ahead 3-0 and scored the game-winning goal in the process with a bending free kick from 30 yards out that found the back of the Bulldogs' net. Wild leads the NCAA with 12 goals and has scored at least two goals in four of his last five games.

Craig Swaby cut the Upstate lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 74th minute and Jascha Gluckschalt struck in the 82nd minute to pull the Bulldogs within one.

Upstate returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Davidson, N.C., to face Davidson.
