Asheville, N.C. – Courtney Naber's penalty kick goal with 35 seconds left in overtime lifted UNC Asheville to a 2-1 victory over USC Upstate Saturday evening from Greenwood Soccer Field.
With the match tied 1-1 and the first overtime winding down, the USC Upstate defense was called for a hand ball inside its own box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Bulldogs. Naber stepped to the mark and fired a shot into the right corner of the Upstate net for her first goal of the season.
Maura Coolbaugh gave UNC Asheville an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 23rd minute off an assist from Paige Trent.
Upstate freshman Kate Winegarner tied the game in the 47th minute when she notched her third goal of the season. Winegarner leads the Spartans with eight points on three goals and two assists.
"I saw that the goalie was off the line so I turned on my defender and chipped the ball over the keeper," Winegarner said.
Caroline Keener nearly netted the golden goal for Upstate midway through overtime when she took a pass in stride from senior Haley Gethin, but Asheville keeper Lily Brown left her post and managed to get a foot on Keener's shot to thwart the scoring chance.
Upstate keeper Ellen Bright tied a season-high with 11 saves and leads the Atlantic Sun Conference with 71.
Upstate returns to the pitch Sept. 26 when the Spartans travel to Newark, N.J., to open conference play at NJIT.
