Spartanburg, S.C. – Four players compiled double-doubles Tuesday evening as the USC Upstate volleyball team held off the Wofford Terriers 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25,22-25, 22-20) in an exciting five-set match to close out non-conference play inside the Hodge Center.
The Spartans improve to 12-4 on the season and match their most wins in a season during the Division I era. With the loss, Wofford falls to 7-8 overall.
Lexi Gober, Kayla Eversgerd, Callie Yeargin and Rebecca Shearer each had a double-double for Upstate as it earned its second straight five-set victory over the Terriers. Yeargin set a new career-high with 16 kills to go with 10 digs, while Shearer compiled a career-best 22 digs and contributed 14 kills. Gober dished out 53 assists and added 19 digs. Eversgerd tallied 16 kills and 19 digs, and Emily Koelling recorded 12 kills. Shannon Weiss had 20 digs.
Bella Santoro and Colleen Reilly each had a double-double for Wofford. Santoro collected 16 kills and 26 digs, and Reilly registered 10 kills and 12 digs. Molly Mayo finished with a team-high 49 assists and Jessica Graham 30 digs.
The first set was tightly contested the entire way with neither team holding a lead of more than four. The Spartans took an early 7-4 lead off Gober's kill but the Terriers answered with a 7-3 run to go in front 11-10. Upstate got the lead back seven plays later and increased the cushion out to 16-13 on an attack error by Santoro. The Spartans led by as many as four, 23-19, after a kill by Eversgerd. Wofford trimmed the lead late to 24-22 on a kill by Alex Holland, but Upstate won the set the following play with a kill from Yeargin.
The Spartans jumped out to a 10-3 lead to begin the second set highlighted by an 8-1 run to start the frame. Upstate pushed its lead into double-digits at 15-5 after Gober recorded back-to-back service aces. The Spartans stayed ahead by at least six points the rest of the way with Shearer capturing the set as her kill put the score at 25-17.
The Terriers began their comeback by taking the third set 25-23. The teams traded the opening 12 points before Wofford reeled off four straight to take a 14-9 lead. Upstate rallied late to even the score at 21-21 after Eversgerd's kill topped off an 8-3 run. Gober followed the kill by Eversgerd with an ace giving the Spartans a 22-21 advantage. The Terriers finished the set by scoring four of the final five points to win by two.
The fourth set featured eight ties as Wofford rallied for the second straight frame to win 25-22 and send the match into a fifth set. The Terriers jumped out in front of Upstate 9-5 early in the set after an attack error by Yeargin. The Spartans used a 10-6 run to tie the score at 15-15, and benefitted from three consecutive Wofford errors to take an 18-16 lead. Upstate was held to four points after that as the Terriers recorded the final three for a 25-22 victory.
The lead changed hands seven times during the fifth set with four coming over the final 16 plays. The Spartans held an early 7-4 lead on another kill by Yeargin and maintained the three-point advantage several plays later when Koelling made it 13-10. Wofford fought back to sit at set point, 14-13, forcing an Upstate timeout. Both teams traded points over the next 14 plays with the Spartans being on set point four times. Upstate held off a few late charges by the Terriers and went in front 21-20 on Yeargin's final kill of the match. The Spartans won the set on the next play after an attack error by Lauren Miller gave them the 22-20 win and 3-2 triumph in the match.
Upstate begins A-Sun play Saturday afternoon as it travels to Kennesaw State for a 3 p.m. match.
