Spartanburg, S.C. – Michelangelo Dovidio and Rinaldi Alphonse each netted goals for USC Upstate on Tuesday evening, but it was not enough as the Spartan men's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Georgia State Panthers in their final non-conference game of the season from County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate falls to 3-6 on the season while Georgia State improves to 7-5 overall.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Alphonse led the Spartans offensively with three shots and was one of six players to have one attempt on-net. Victor Borba Labi also had two shots.
- Frank Rosenwald had a game-high five shots for the Panthers with all five going on-goal.
- Santiago Restrepo set a new career-high in goal by recording six saves.
- Yannic Horn grabbed four saves for Georgia State.
- The Panthers held a 15-11 advantage in shots, while Upstate led 5-2 in corner kicks.
USC UPSTATE GOALS
- Dovidio scored his first goal of the season in the 54th minute of action to cut the Spartans deficit down to two. A throw in near side by Calon Minors went straight to Dovidio who was battling a Georgia State defender in the middle of the 18-yard box. Dovidio's header went over a leaping Horn left side. Minors earned his team-leading fourth assist of the season. (USC Upstate 1, Georgia State 3)
- Alphonse followed the goal by Dovidio with his second of the season, unassisted, in the 72nd minute. Alphonse intercepted a pass deep in Panther territory and was left one-on-one against Horn. His strike went past Horn, who was diving to his right, and into the bottom-left corner of the net. (USC Upstate 2, Georgia State 3)
GEORGIA STATE GOALS
- Rosenwald scored the first of his two goals in the contest during the 27th minute. An initial strike by Hannes Burmeister was saved by Restrepo but was unable to hold on to the ball. Rosenwald put the rebound attempt into the open net. (USC Upstate 0, Georgia State 1)
- Burmeister picked up his second assist of the game in the 50th minute when his cross near side found Nick Hague inside the 18-yard box. Hague beat an Upstate defender while the cross was in the air and placed his one-timer past Restrepo. (USC Upstate 0, Georgia State 2)
- Kwaku Adu extended the Georgia State lead to three goals in the 53rd minute as Rosenwald was credited with the assist. Rosenwald's first attempt was deflected by Restrepo and Adu scored on the put back. (USC Upstate 0, Georgia State 3)
- Rosenwald collected his second goal of the contest in the 78th minute to extend the Panthers lead back to two. A through ball by Rashid Alarape left Rosenwald one-on-one against Restrepo. Rosenwald took several dribbles before scoring just outside the 18-yard box. (USC Upstate 2, Georgia State 4)
