Spartans Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to North Florida

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team responded to a 2-0 deficit with three goals but dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker in overtime to North Florida on Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer Stadium.

North Florida improves to 6-6-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the ASUN while Upstate falls to 0-12-3 and 0-4-1.

Stats of the Match

  • North Florida outshot Upstate 19-16. Both teams had 10 shots on goal.
  • Katy Mixon took a match-high seven shots. Kate Winegarner led Upstate with three shots.
  • Victoria Ekeli made seven saves for North Florida. Brooke Bailey made six saves for Upstate.

  • Maddie Little headed a ball sent in from an Abbie Ellis corner kick at 66:59 (North Florida 2, USC Upstate 1). 
  • Jada Kinlaw found a loose ball in the box and poked it past Ekeli and an Osprey defender to tie the match at 74:56 (North Florida 2, USC Upstate 2).
  • Leah Tyson gave Upstate a 3-2 lead at the 82:29 mark on a cross from Abbie Ellis to the left side of the box (North Florida 2, USC Upstate 3).

North Florida Goals

  • Hayley Koncir played a through ball to Mixon, who then beat Bailey in a one-on-one battle (North Florida 1, USC Upstate 0).
  • Mixon scored her second goal of the match just over three minutes later on a chip over Bailey (North Florida 2, USC Upstate 0).
  • Krista Colubiale tied the match at the 83:57 mark on a header inside the box near the left post (North Florida 3, USC Upstate 3).
  • Sarah Wasser took a pass from Mixon and scored on a shot from 30 yards out in the top right corner of the net (North Florida 4, USC Upstate 3).
