Washington, D.C. – Mike Cunningham and Michael Buchanan each finished in double-figures to lead the USC Upstate men's basketball team offensively, but the Spartans would fall to the Georgetown Hoyas in their 2016-17 season opener 105-60 Saturday afternoon at the Verizon Center.
Upstate falls to 0-1 on the season while Georgetown improves to 1-0 overall.
Cunningham had a team-high 17 points for the Spartans, while Buchanan added 12 points and six rebounds. Rodney Pryor led all players for the Hoyas with a game-high 32 points.
GAME BREAKDOWN
- Georgetown opened the game scoring the first five points to highlight a 19-4 run over the first four minutes.
- Cunningham connected on a pair of 3-pointers to cut Upstate's deficit down to 22-10 just over a minute later. The Washington, D.C. native made four three's in the first half.
- The Hoyas would go ahead 34-12 with 11:37 left in the first half, but another 3-pointer by Cunningham made the score 34-17 at the midway point of the half.
- Georgetown led by as many as 33 points during the opening half and went into the locker room ahead 68-35 on Isaac Copeland's last-second layup.
- The Spartans held the Hoyas without a 3-pointer in the second half as they trailed by 31 points twice after baskets from Buchanan and Josh Cuthbertson. A layup by Buchanan with 11:58 remaining put the score at 74-43.
- Deion Holmes kept Upstate within a 30-point margin at the 9:27 mark when the sophomore's jumper trimmed the Georgetown lead to 80-50.
- The Hoyas took their largest lead of the game at 103-57 on a free-throw from Ra'Mond Hines with 1:04 to go.
- Cunningham scored the Spartans' final field goal on his 3-pointer with 40 seconds left. Jonathan Mulmore's layup with just over 30 seconds remaining gave Georgetown the 105-60 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- All nine players that played for Upstate registered at least one point led by the 17 from Cunningham and Buchanan's 12.
- Cunningham tied his career-high of five 3-pointers after shooting 5-of-10 behind the arc. Buchanan also finished 4-for-5 from the field.
- Malik Moore added eight points and six rebounds off the bench, and Ramel Thompkins contributed a game-high seven rebounds.
- Pryor was one of five Hoyas to score in double-figures and was joined by Copeland, Jessie Govan, LJ Peak and Tre Campbell.
- Govan had six rebounds and Jagan Mosely dished out six assists.
- The Spartans finished the game shooting 36.8% (21-of-57) overall and tied Georgetown 33-33 in rebounds.
