Purdue Gives Spartans First Loss of Season

West Lafayette, Ind. – The Purdue Boilermakers dealt the USC Upstate women's basketball team its first loss of the season, 71-41, in a non-conference matchup at Mackey Arena on Thursday night.

Purdue improves to 1-2 while Upstate drops to 2-1.

Raven Jefferson led Upstate with 12 points, followed by Tamera Thorpe with nine points. A'Lexxus Davis grabbed a season-best five rebounds. Dominque McBryde scored 14 points to lead Purdue, followed by Andreona Keys with 11 and Lamina Cooper with 10. McBryde and Keys each had 11 rebounds.

Game Breakdown

  • Purdue opened the game on a 5-0 run before the Spartans tied the game at 8 after Vanessa Agrusa completed a three-point play. The Boilermakers would close the frame on a 10-2 run to lead 20-10 after the opening 10 minutes.
  • A Thorpe layup brought the Spartans within eight, 20-12, at the 9:38 mark of the second quarter. Purdue's lead would remain between nine and 11 points until a Keys 3-pointer gave the hosts a 30-18 lead at the 3:38 mark. Purdue led 34-18 at halftime.
  • The Boilermakers outscored Upstate 16-10 in the third quarter and 21-13 in the fourth quarter. A Dominique Oden layup just before the final buzzer served as the final points of the game.
