Late Rally by Upstate Falls Short against William & Mary

Spartanburg, S.C. – A'Lexxus Davis scored a career-high nine points and pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds but a late rally by the USC Upstate women's basketball team fell short as the Spartans lost to William & Mary 49-46 in the Hodge Center on Tuesday night. 

William & Mary improves to 3-1 while Upstate drops to 2-3. 

Davis' nine points surpasses her previous best of seven and the 14 rebounds are the second time that she has finished in double-figures in rebounds during her Upstate career. Raven Jefferson scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Spartans. Jefferson finished 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point line with two of the 3-pointers coming in the final 24 seconds of the fourth quarter. Brittney Delva also finished with a career-high nine points and a career-best five steals. 

Marlena Temba led the Tribe with 11 points followed by Alexandra Massaquel with 10. 

Game Breakdown

  • Jefferson scored six of Upstate's 10 first quarter points as the Tribe led 15-10 after the opening period.
  • After the Tribe took a 19-12 lead with 6:27 to go in the second quarter, the Spartans trimmed the deficit to 19-15 thanks to a Davis free throw with 4:04 to go. The Tribe answered with a 4-0 run to take a 23-15 lead, their largest of the half. Delva hit a 3-pointer as the quarter ended as William & Mary led 23-20 at halftime.
  • William & Mary opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run as the Tribe led 32-20 following a Masaquel layup at the 7:49 mark. Upstate pulled to within eight, 32-24, thanks to a Delva layup. The Tribe led 38-26 at the end of the period.
  • Upstate opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run capped by a Jefferson 3-pointer with 7:39 remaining to make the score 38-33 in favor of the Tribe. William & Mary would extend its lead back to double-digits, 47-36, following a pair of Jeanne Gaumont free throws with 3:22 to go.
  • Davis brought the Spartans to within seven, 47-40, with just over a minute remaining before Tremba put the visitors up 49-40 with 31 seconds to play. Jefferson would hit 3-pointers with 24 and 13 seconds to go to bring Upstate within three points. William & Mary missed two free throws on its final possession and the Spartans would get two chances to tie, but the first was blocked and the second bounced off the rim.

By the Numbers

  • Davis is the first Spartan this season to finish in double-figures in rebounds.
  • Delva and DeNisha Swain each had three assists.
  • Both teams committed 16 turnovers, but the Tribe outscored Upstate 21-8 in points off turnovers.
  • The Upstate bench outscored the Tribe reserves 16-12.
  • The 20 points scored by Upstate in the fourth quarter were the most by either team.
  • William & Mary went 20-for-48 (41.7 percent) from the field while the Spartans were 11-for-62 (24.2 percent) shooting. The Tribe were 4-for-11 (36.4 percent) from behind the 3-point line while the Spartans finished 5-for-21 (23.8 percent) behind the arc.
  • Upstate held a 10-0 edge in second chance points.
