Balanced Attack Leads Spartans over Warren Wilson

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team had four players finish in double figures as the Spartans defeated Warren Wilson 91-53 on Wednesday night at the Hodge Center.

Upstate evens its record at 3-3 while Warren Wilson drops to 4-4. 

DeNisha Swain scored a career-best 15 points while dishing out a career-high six assists. Riley Popplewell tied a career-high with 15 points, matching a 15-point output against Illinois on Sunday. Bailey Wensler finished with a career-high 14 points and was a career-best 4-for-6 from behind the 3-point line. Raven Jefferson scored 11 points to finish in double figures for the 31st time in her career. Jefferson and Popplewell just missed out on a double-double as they each pulled down nine rebounds. 

Amber Godfrey led the Owls with 15 points, followed by Danasia Dumas and Jada McCrimmon with 12 points each. 

Game Breakdown

  • Warren Wilson opened the game on a 14-4 run as they made four 3-pointers in the first 4:36 of the contest. The Owls had their largest lead of the game, 16-5, following a Godfrey jumper with 3:32 to play and led 18-10 after the opening 10 minutes.
  • An Allison church jumper at the 5:47 mark of the second quarter gave the Owls a 23-17 lead. Upstate would close the period on a 20-0 run capped by Breanna Jefferson's three-point play to lead 37-23 at halftime. Upstate outscored Warren Wilson 27-5 in the quarter and scored 21 points off of 14 Owl turnovers.
  • McCrimmon brought the Owls to within 11, 37-26, on a 3-pointer 16 seconds into the third quarter. A Wensler 3-pointer with 4:42 to go gave the Spartans a 58-31 lead, their largest of the quarter.
  • Warren Wilson would get no closer than 24 points in the fourth quarter as Upstate scored a game-high 28 points in the frame.

By the Numbers

  • Upstate scored 81 of its 91 points in the final three quarters.
  • The Spartans outrebounded the Owls 58-31
  • Upstate outscored Warren Wilson 42-6 in points in the paint and 18-0 on fast break points.
  • Led by Swain and Wensler, the Upstate bench scored 53 points compared to seven points by the Warren Wilson reserves.  
  • Warren Wilson committed 26 turnovers compared to 17 by Upstate. Upstate scored 37 points off of turnovers while the Owls scored 13.
