Spartanburg, S.C. – Tamera Thorpe scored a career-high 27 points as the USC Upstate women's basketball team wrapped up the 2016 portion of its schedule with a 76-63 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore in the Hodge Center on Friday afternoon.
Upstate improves to 6-8 while Maryland Eastern Shore drops to 6-5.
Thorpe led Upstate with 27 points. It's the 14th time in her career that she's finished in double figures and first that she's scored 20 or more points in a game. Raven Jefferson added 16 points while Brittney Delva tied her career-high with 13 points. Vanessa Agrusa grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. Delva had a team-best four assists.
Moengaroa Subritzky and Shauntesha Bryant led the Hawks with 14 points each, followed by Ciani Byrom with 12 points and Keyera Eaton with 11 points. Subritzky had a double-double as she pulled down 11 rebounds.
Game Breakdown
- A Delva free throw opened the scoring two minutes into the game. The Spartans led 10-6 following a Thorpe three-point play with 2:11 left in the opening frame. A Bryant layup just before the buzzer gave the Hawks a 15-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
- After Maryland Eastern Shore went ahead 19-16 on a Bryant jumper, a DeNisha Swain 3-pointer followed by a Thorpe layup gave the hosts a 21-19 edge. Bailey Wensler broke a scoring drought of over two minutes by both teams with a 3-pointer that tied the contest at 24 with 2:45 to go in the second quarter. Upstate led 28-27 at halftime.
- Tori Morris tied the game at 28 with a free throw at the 7:09 mark of the third quarter. Upstate reclaimed the lead on a Thorpe 3-point play with 4:05 to go. Bryant would tie the game at 37 with 2:11 to play before a Delva layup sparked a 9-2 Spartan run to end the quarter as Upstate led 46-39 at the end of the third period.
- Upstate took a game-high 16-point lead, 55-39, after a Thorpe jumper at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter. Maryland Eastern Shore trimmed the Upstate lead to 62-53 following a Ra'Jean Martin layup with 3:12 remaining. Upstate pushed its lead back to double digits on a Delva layup on their next possession and would lead by double digits for the rest of the game.

- The game featured six ties and 14 lead changes. Of the 14 lead changes, nine occurred in the first quarter.
- Upstate went on a 14-0 run beginning with 16 seconds left in the third quarter and ending at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter.
- Thorpe surpassed her previous career best of 13 points which she achieved earlier this season against William & Mary.
- Upstate finished 26-for-69 (37.7 percent) from the field while Maryland Eastern Shore shot 27-for-77 (35.1 percent) from the field.
- The Spartan bench outscored the Maryland Eastern Shore reserves 40-25.
