Spartanburg, S.C. – Jordan Ford drove in a pair of runs on a triple in the eighth inning as USC Upstate defeated Dayton 6-4 on Saturday at Harley Park.
Upstate improves to 2-0 on the season while Dayton drops to 0-2.
Ford went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and five RBI to lead the Upstate offensive. Charlie Carpenter went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Hunter Gilbert was 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored.
Dayton began the second inning with back-to-back walks before a flyout and passed ball put runners in scoring position. Cameron Silva drove in the game's first run on a groundout.
The Spartans answered in the home half of the inning with four runs. Carpenter and Gilbert collected base hits before a popup and a hit batter loaded the bases. Ford cleared the bases with a double and would then score on a Cody Brittain base hit.
Glen Jones drove in the second Dayton run in the third inning on a double. The Flyers tied the game in the fifth on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.
Carpenter opened the Upstate eighth inning with a double and would advance to third on a groundout. Following a strikeout and a walk, Ford laced a triple down the right field line to score the go-ahead runs. Dayton would go down in order in the ninth inning to seal the Upstate win.
Zach Mitchell earned the win with four shutout innings while allowing one hit. Nick Gobert took the loss, allowing one run on four hits in five innings of work.
Upstate welcomes Stony Brook to Harley Park tomorrow at 2 p.m.
