MOBILE, Ala. – Closing out the season's opening weekend with an opportunity to win its first series of the new campaign, USC Upstate baseball's comeback attempts fell short in a 7-3 setback in the rubber match against South Alabama.
Settling the Spartans as they sought their comeback, sophomore right-handed pitcher
Cayden Mackey tied his career-long outing, tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball, scattering two hits and four baserunners. He struck out four batters, the third multi-strikeout game of his career.
Igniting a three-run sixth frame, redshirt senior third baseman
Jake Armsey drove home two with a single to left-center, collecting Upstate's lone multi-RBI game, the sixth different Spartan with a multi-RBI game this season. Redshirt sophomore centerfielder
Henry Zenor drove home another tally with a double to shallow center, his second of three hits on the afternoon, the most by a Spartan in the contest.
Notching another multi-hit effort for the Spartans, his third in as many games as a Spartan, redshirt sophomore shortstop
Maloy Heaghney recorded Upstate's other multi-hit game, lacing a single and a double.
