Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate baseball team suffered their first loss of the 2016 season on Wednesday, dropping a 6-3 decision at Wofford. Wofford improves to 4-0 while Upstate falls to 3-1.
Alec Paradowski led off the Wofford first inning with a walk and scored on a Carson Waln infield single for a 1-0 Terrier lead. Tyler Jackson limited the damage with a foulout and a strikeout as Wofford left the bases loaded.
James Fowlkes opened the third inning with a single and advanced to third on a groundout and stolen bases, but Wofford starter John Caskey got a strikeout to end the inning.
Charlie Carpenter tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Hunter Gilbert reached on an error and reached third on a Jordan Ford single before a flyout ended the inning.
A leadoff double by Cody Brittain in the fifth inning followed by a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt gave the Spartans runners in scoring position with one out. Zach Krider brought Brittain home with a sacrifice fly, giving Upstate a 2-1 lead.
Wofford answered in the home half of the inning with four runs. Demetrius Jennings opened the inning with a single followed by an Upstate error with Paradowski at the plate to put runners in scoring position. Max McDougald tied the game on a double, followed by a Kody Ruedisili double that scored Paradowski for a 3-2 Wofford lead. Brett Hash drove in a run on a single, with the final run of the inning scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Brittain led off the seventh with a double as the Spartans loaded the bases thanks to a hit batter and a Daniel Fickas single. Krider would ground into a double play which scored Brittain before a strikeout ended the inning.
Brittain went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Zach Krider finished two-for-four with two singles and an RBI. Carpenter went 1-for-3 with a home run and run scored and also allowed one hit with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work on the mound.
Waln was 3-for-5 with three singles, a run scored and an RBI to lead the Terriers. Paradowski was 2-for-4 with a single, double and two runs scored. Wofford finished with five doubles.
Elliot Lance earned the win as he allowed one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Jackson took the loss after he surrendered five runs, four earned, on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in four innings.
Upstate returns to action on Friday against Evansville at Harley Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
