Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team scored six runs in the first four innings as they defeated Monmouth 7-1 at Harley Park on Saturday.
Upstate improves to 4-2 with the win while Monmouth drops to 2-4.
Cody Brittain led the Spartan offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, two singles and two RBI. Zach Krider went 2-for-4 with a single, double, run scored and two RBI. Brendan Brundage was 1-for-3 with a single, run scored and RBI. Jordan Miller was 1-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI. Daniel Fickas, Jordan Ford, Charlie Carpenter and Hunter Gilbert each had a hit. A total of five Upstate pitchers limited Monmouth to four hits.
Aidan Favia went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored to lead Monmouth. Christian Holland was 1-for-3 with a double while Dan Shea finished 1-for-4 with a single.
A Carpenter single followed by a Monmouth error allowed the first two runners to reach in the Upstate second inning. The Spartan scored their first run of the game as a result of an error and added another run in the frame on a Krider groundout.
The Spartans took control of the game with a four-run fourth inning. Miller doubled with one out in the inning, followed by a Krider single to left that put runners on the corners. Brundage singled through the left side of the infield to plate Miller. Krider would score on an error before Brittain brought home a pair of runs on a double with two outs.
Favia led off the Monmouth fifth with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After advancing to third on a flyout, Favia would score on a wild pitch. The Hawks would load the bases but Zach Mitchell came on in relief and got out of the inning without allowing any additional runs.
Upstate got the run back in the bottom half of the inning as Gilbert reached on a walk and scored on a Krider double. Upstate would strand a runner in each of their final three at-bats.
Mitchell earned the win in relief, allowing a base hit with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work. Eric Birklund allowed one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Anthony Ciavarella took the loss as he allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Upstate welcomes Rider to Harley Park on Sunday for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
