Greenville, S.C. –Zach Krider drove in a career-high five runs as the USC Upstate Spartans defeated Furman 11-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
Upstate improves to 6-2 with the win while Furman drops to 4-3.
Krider went 3-for-6 with two singles, a home run, run scored and five RBI. James Fowlkes was 2-for-3 with two singles, a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. Jaden Savage went 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs scored. J.J. Shimko tied a career-high with three hits as he went 3-for-5 with two singles, a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Cody Brittain went 2-for-5 with two singles. Jordan Ford collected a pair of hits and drove in a run. The 11 runs scored and 15 hits are both season-highs for the Spartans.
Jabari Richards went 2-for-4 with a single, home run, two runs scored and an RBI to lead Furman.
Upstate got on the board in the first inning as Shimko led off with a double, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a Krider base hit.
The Spartans scored five runs in the fourth inning with two outs. Following a flyout and groundout, Savage got things started with a single followed by a Fowlkes base hit. Shimko drove in Savage with a base hit before Fowlkes scored thanks to a Brittain single. Krider delivered the big blow with his first home run of the season to give Upstate a 6-0 lead.
Jake Beaver began the Upstate fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Beaver took advantage of a wild pitch to advance to third and scored on a Ford base hit. Ford would score on a groundout, giving Upstate a 7-0 lead.
Furman got on the board in the sixth inning on a Richards solo home run. Upstate added a pair in the seventh inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a Krider single. The Paladins plated a run in the eighth inning on a Richards double.
Fowlkes led off the ninth inning with a home run for Upstate's season-best 11th run. Furman scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Jackson earned the win as he allowed two runs on seven hits with a career-high 12 strikeouts in eight innings. Ryan Griffith took the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings.
Upstate returns to Harley Park on Wednesday against Wofford at 4 p.m.
