Mitchell Pitches Spartans to Victory over Wofford

– Zach Mitchell pitched seven shutout innings as the USC Upstate Spartans claimed a 2-0 victory over Wofford on Wednesday afternoon at Harley Park.

Upstate improves to 7-2 while Wofford drops to 7-2. The teams split the season series with each team winning at their home field.

James Fowlkes went 2-for-3 with two singles. Daniel Fickas went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI. Cody Brittain went 2-for-4 with two singles. J.J. Shimko finished 2-for-4 with a single and double. Charlie Carpenter was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.

Wofford was held to four hits, with Alec Paradowski, Carson Wain, Alex Malsch and Demetrius Jennings each reaching on a single.

Shimko reached on a double with one out in the first inning before a strikeout and flyout ended the inning.

After a double play ended the visiting half of the second inning, Upstate used a single by Fowlkes with one out followed by a two-out base hit by Shimko to put runners on the corners before a fielder's choice ended the inning.

The Spartans took advantage of a Wofford error to get on the board in the fifth. Jaden Savage reached on an error and advanced to second on a Fowlkes base hit with one out. Fickas brought home Savage on a single to center field.

Following an error that allowed the leadoff batter to reach in the Wofford sixth, the Terriers advanced the tying runner to second on a sacrifice bunt followed by a hit batter. Mitchell would get out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Carpenter led off the Upstate sixth with double, advanced to third on a Brittain base hit and scored on a Jake Beaver sacrifice fly.

The Terriers threatened in the eighth inning with runners on first and second with two outs thanks to a fielder's choice and a single. Richie Lacell struck out the first batter he faced to end the threat before the Terriers were retired in order in the ninth to end the game.

Mitchell earned his third win of the season in his first start, allowing two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over seven innings. Lacell picked up his third save of the year, striking out one batter in 1.1 innings. Austin Higginbotham took the loss, allowing one unearned run on five hits in 4.2 innings.

Upstate remains at Harley Park this weekend, welcoming Xavier for a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
