Spartanburg, S.C. – Kyle Butler drove in six runs on three doubles as the Radford Highlanders defeated USC Upstate 13-2 at Harley Park on Sunday afternoon.
Radford improves to 4-16 while Upstate drops to 8-12.
James Fowlkes went 2-for-3 with a single and double to lead the Spartan offense. Cody Brittain went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI. Anthony Vaglica went 1-for-3 with a single while Pat Gaudard went 1-for-2 with a single and RBI.
Butler went 3-for-5 with three doubles and six RBI to lead Radford. Jonathan Gonzalez finished 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBI. Chris Coia went 3-for-5 with three singles and two runs scored.
The Highlanders got on the board in the third inning after Coia reached on a leadoff single and scored on a Gonzales single. Radford scored five runs in the fourth inning with three runs scoring on a Butler double.
Radford added three runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh. Brittain got the Spartans on the board in the seventh with a single to center field that scored Daniel Fickas. In the Upstate eighth, Fowlkes reached on a one out single before being retired on a fielder's choice. Gaudard made his first hit as a Spartan count with an RBI single that brought home Zach Krider.
Upstate left 11 runners on base while Radford stranded 10 baserunners.
Mitchell MacKeith earned his second win of the year, scattering four hits with a walk and four strikeouts over six innings. Zach Mitchell (3-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Upstate hosts Lafayette tomorrow at 6 p.m.
