Spartanburg, S.C. – Holly McKinnon tossed her team-leading sixth complete game of the season to lead the USC Upstate softball team to a 4-0 victory over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose Saturday afternoon during day two of the Buffalo Wild Wings Spartan Invitational from Cyrill Stadium.
Upstate improves to 16-2 on the season while Presbyterian College falls to 7-8.
Amy Szymanowski hit her team-high ninth home run of the season against the Blue Hose and was one of six players to record one hit. Ryan Rector and Kori Wancheck also had one RBI each in the contest. Erin Ruff and Kelsie Sanchez both led Presbyterian College offensively as both had one hit.
McKinnon (9-1) struck out a season-high 10 batters and limited the Blue Hose to just two hits while surrendering one walk. Katie Brown (3-3) took the loss after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing four runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
McKinnon retired the first nine Presbyterian College hitters of the contest and held the Blue Hose hitless over the first 5.2 innings before giving up two hits with two outs in the top of the sixth. Other than surrendering a walk to start the fourth, McKinnon sat down 18 of the first 19 she faced before Presbyterian College registered its only two hits of the game.
The Spartans got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth scoring three times to take a 3-0 lead. Brittany Case led off the inning with a walk and scored the next at-bat on Rector's double off the right center field fence. Szymanowski followed two batters later getting hit by a pitch and later came home on a PC throwing error attempting to pick her off at second base. Wancheck capped the scoring with her RBI double down the left field line.
Szymanowski sealed the 4-0 Upstate win in the sixth inning with her leadoff homer over the right center field fence.
After giving up the two hits to Presbyterian College in the sixth, McKinnon retired the final four batters, including three on strikeouts, to pick up her team-best ninth win of the season.
The Spartans conclude play in the Buffalo Wild Wings Spartan Invitational Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Elon.
