Xavier Defeats Spartans in Extra Innings

- Joe Gellenbeck's single with two outs in the 10th inning brought home the game-winning run as Xavier defeated the USC Upstate baseball team 3-2 in non-conference action at Harley Park on Saturday afternoon.

Xavier improves to 2-7 while Upstate drops to 7-4.

Daniel Fickas went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles to lead the Spartans. Jake Beaver went 1-for-4 with a double and RBI.  Jordan Ford and Jaden Savage each went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI. James Fowlkes was 1-for-4 with a single.

Gellenbeck went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI while David Morton was 1-for-4 with a home run and RBI. Matt Fallon finished 1-for-5 with a single and RBI.

Charlie Carpenter led off the second inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a Beaver double that moved Carpenter to third, Ford brought home the game's first run on a single. Savage followed with a base hit to plate the second run of the inning. The Spartans had the bases loaded with one out before an infield fly and flyout ended the inning.

Morton cut the Upstate lead in half thanks to a leadoff home run in the third inning. The Musketeers tied the game in the fifth as Ethan Schmidt reached on a single with one out and scored on a Fallon base hit.

Fickas opened the Upstate eighth with a base hit before being retired on a fielder's choice. A Xavier error allowed Zach Krider to reach with two outs before Krider advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Spartans had runners on the corners following a Carpenter walk before a groundout ended the inning.

Will LaRue reached on a one-out single in the tenth inning and advanced to third thanks to a stolen base and a flyout. Gellenbeck delivered the go-ahead single on a 3-2 count to put the visitors up 3-2. Upstate was retired in order during their half of the inning.

Xavier left eight runners on base compared to six by Upstate.

Trey Schramm earned his first win of the year, allowing one hit with a walk and three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Garrett Schilling picked up his first save of the season with a perfect inning. Richie Lacell took the loss as he allowed one run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings.

Upstate concludes the series with Xavier tomorrow at 1 p.m.
