Spartanburg, S.C. – Lexi Shubert tossed her second complete game shutout in three starts, and the USC Upstate softball team took advantage of two Jacksonville errors, as the Spartans completed a three-game sweep of the Dolphins with a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.
Upstate improves to 32-11 on the season and 6-5 in A-Sun play, while Jacksonville falls to 18-24 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
Shubert (5-3) picked up her fifth complete game of the season, and third shutout, after limiting the Dolphins to just four hits over 7.0 innings while allowing two walks and striking out five. Victoria Brown (11-14) suffered the loss by surrendering three runs (none earned) on three hits, four walks and four strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.
Amy Szymanowski, Ansley Gilstrap and Kendsey Chappelear all had one hit apiece to lead the Spartans offensively. Gilstrap, Chappelear and Abbie Millete each scored one run. Allie McCourt had a team-high two hits for Jacksonville.
JU left four runners on base over the first three innings as Shubert ended the second and third innings with back-to-back foul ball outs. Gilstrap and Chappelear reached to begin the bottom of the third as both drew walks against Brown. Kayla Hussey would sacrifice them over to second and third on her bunt. The first Jacksonville error of the game led to two Upstate runs, putting it ahead 2-0, as a ball hit by Megan Obier went under the glove of the Dolphins second baseman.
The Spartans added to their lead in the fourth, scoring once to extend the advantage to 3-0. After the first two Upstate batters were retired, Millete was walked to bring up Gilstrap. Gilstrap took a 0-1 offering by Brown into left field for a single. Jacksonville left fielder Sable Lee had trouble fielding the ball which allowed Millete to score all the way from first base.
Shubert gave up just three hits over her final three innings to secure the Spartan victory. In the top of the seventh she sat down the first two batters on a fly out and strikeout. Following a two-out single, Shubert ended the game with a groundout to Szymanowski at third base to complete the three-game sweep for Upstate.
The Spartans host South Carolina at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening on ESPN3.
