DeLand, Fla. – The Stetson University Hatters swept an Atlantic Sun doubleheader over USC Upstate on Saturday, defeating the Spartans 9-3 in the opening game and 8-5 in the nightcap.
Stetson improves to 19-20 overall and 3-5 in the league while Upstate drops to 18-22 and 1-9.
Game 1: Stetson 9, Upstate 3
Stetson scored five runs in the first three innings en route to a 9-3 victory over Upstate.
The Hatters took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by John Fussell.
J.J. Shimko recorded Upstate's first hit of the game in the third inning on a one-out double but was stranded after a groundout and strikeout. The Hatters took a 5-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Kirk Sidwell three-run home run.
Cody Brittain led off the fourth inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Jake Beaver single to get the Spartans on the board. Stetson got the run back in the home half of the inning.
Stetson added a run in the sixth inning. After a leadoff walk, Will Mackenzie drove in a run with a double to center field for a 7-1 lead.
James Fowlkes brought home a run in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to cut the Spartan deficit to 7-2. Stetson scored two runs in the home half of the inning on a single and an Upstate error.
Shimko led off the Upstate ninth with a double and scored on a Stetson error for the game's final run.
Shimko went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Daniel Fickas went 2-for-5 with two singles. Beaver went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI while Fowlkes had an RBI.
Fussell went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI. Matt Morales went 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs scored. Sidwell went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.
Brooks Wilson (4-5) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Charlie Carpenter (1-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings.
Game 2: Stetson 9, Upstate 5
Stetson scored three runs in the second and four runs in the fourth inning as the Hatters completed the doubleheader sweep of Upstate.
The Spartans had the bases loaded with two outs in the first inning before a groundout ended the frame.
Stetson scored three runs in second inning, two on a Jacob Koos triple, for a 3-0 lead.
Upstate got on the board in the third inning as Brittain reached on a double with two outs, advanced to third on a Carpenter base hit and scored after a Stetson error. The Spartans added a run in the fourth inning as Devon Ortiz led off with a double, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a fielder's choice.
Stetson scored four runs in the fourth inning on singles by Jorge Flores, Koos and Vance Vizcaino that scored one run each as well as a Matt Morales sacrifice fly.
Upstate scored three runs in the sixth inning on three hits while taking advantage of two Stetson errors. Ortiz led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before taking third base on an error that allowed Pat Raiff to reach. Zach Krider reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ortiz. Raiff scored on a groundout before Fowlkes brought home Krider with a base hit. The Spartans had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs before a fielder's choice ended the inning. Stetson answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Cory Reid double.
The Hatters added an insurance run as a result of an Upstate wild pitch in the eighth.
Fowlkes went 3-for-5 with two singles, a double and an RBI. Brittain also went 3-for-5 with two singles, a double and run scored. Ortiz finished 3-for-5 with two singles, a double and two runs scored.
Reid finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Vizcaino went 2-for-4 with two singles, two RBI and a run scored.
Jack Perkins (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Walker Sheller picked up his eighth save after allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout in 2.0 innings. Zach Mitchell (5-3) took the loss as he allowed seven runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts in three innings.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m.
