DeLand, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters completed a three-game sweep of USC Upstate with a 9-2 win at Melching Field on Sunday afternoon.
Stetson improves to 20-20 overall and 4-5 in the Atlantic Sun while Upstate drops to 18-23 and 1-10.
J.J. Shimko led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Cody Brittain brought Shimko home on a single to right field and advanced to second on a Hatter error. A wild pitch advanced Brittain to third before a strikeout ended the inning.
Stetson scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Hatters loaded the bases thanks to a pair of walks and an infield single. Following a strikeout, Austin Hale scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1 before Cory Reid brought home a pair of runs on a single with two outs.
After a Stetson error with two outs in the fourth inning allowed Brendan Brundage to reach and advance to second base, Pat Gaudard brought Brundage home with a single to left to make the score 3-2.
The Hatters added six runs in seventh inning. Kevin Fagan hit three-run home run with one run scoring on a Reid base hit and two runs scoring as a result of a Kirk Sidwell double.
Brittain and Goddard each went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI. Daniel Fickas, James Fowlkes and Devon Ortiz also went 1-for-4 with a single.
Reid went 2-for-4 with two singles and three RBI. Sidwell went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Koos finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Fagan went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.
Ben Onyshko (1-0) earned the win as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Kevin Hickey (2-2) took the loss after he allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in two innings.
Upstate is off until May 4 when the Spartans travel to South Carolina for a 7 p.m. matchup.
