Upstate Drops Road Doubleheader at Stetson

DeLand, Fla. – The USC Upstate softball team fell twice on Sunday afternoon as the Spartans were swept in a doubleheader by the Stetson Hatters at Patricia Wilson Field.

Upstate falls to 28-10 overall and 3-5 in the A-Sun, while Stetson improves to 26-16 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. The Hatters won both games by scores of 10-2 in five innings and 5-4.

The Spartans conclude their seven-game road trip on Wednesday, Apr. 6 with a doubleheader against Western Carolina beginning at 4 p.m.

Game 1 – USC Upstate 2, Stetson 10 (5)
Ashly Smith hit two home runs, and drove in five runs, as Stetson used a six-run fourth inning to win game one of the doubleheader over Upstate 10-2 in five innings.

Brooke Hutto (12-5) earned the win throwing 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Holly McKinnon (17-5) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.

Ryan Rector led the Spartans with two hits and one RBI, while four others had one hit each. Smith finished the game going 4-for-4 at the plate for the Hatters, and Jessica Griffin added two RBI. Molly Shasteen also contributed two hits.

Upstate took a 2-0 lead over Stetson following a two-run top of the fifth inning. Kendsey Chappelear led off the game with a single, and moved to third after a walk to Ansley Gilstrap and a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Case. Rector plated the first run on her fielder's choice as Chappelear beat the throw home. Abbie Millete made it 2-0 for the Spartans two batters later with her RBI single up the middle.

Stetson cut its deficit down to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on Smith's first home run of the contest. Smith would drive in two runs during the six-run fourth as the Hatters built a 7-2 advantage. Griffin started the scoring with her two-run homer to center field and Jazz Vasquez's single down the left field line brought in another run. Following the single by Vasquez, Jessie Tenbroeck drove home Talli Sharp with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Smith ended the game in the bottom of the fifth as her three-run home run to center field gave Stetson the 10-2 victory.

Game 2 – USC Upstate 4, Stetson 5
Rector hit three home runs in a game for the second time this season, but the Hatters scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Upstate 5-4 in game two.

Tori Perkins (8-3) tossed a complete game and surrendered four runs on five hits, four walks and one strikeout. Lexi Shubert (3-3) suffered the loss giving up five runs on six hits, one walk and no strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.

Rector went 3-for-3 to lead the Spartans offensively, and had three RBI while scoring three times. Millete tallied one hit and one RBI. Vasquez and Kelsey Waters both compiled two RBI for Stetson, while Waters had a team-high two hits.

Rector put Upstate in front 1-0 after hitting her first home run to lead off the game on a 1-1 offering from Perkins. Her second home run of the contest, another solo homer, extended the Spartans lead to 2-0 in the top of the third.

The Hatters cut their deficit down to 2-1 in the bottom-half of the third on Kayla Drury's single, and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Vasquez. Millete would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth on a solo homer for her fifth of the season.

Stetson took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth when Waters homered to right field giving it a 5-3 advantage. Rector would hit her third home run with two outs in the seventh, making it a 5-4 contest, but Perkins would secure the win for the Hatters the next at-bat on a groundout.
