Upstate Swept on Final Day of DoubleTree Hotel Buccaneer Challenge

Johnson City, Tenn. – The USC Upstate volleyball team wrapped up play at the DoubleTree Hotel Buccaneer Challenge on Saturday by dropping a pair of matches to the Austin Peay Governors and ETSU Buccaneers inside Brooks Gym. The Spartans fell 3-2 to Austin Peay and 3-0 against host ETSU.

Upstate falls to 0-3 on the season. Austin Peay improves to 2-1 overall and ETSU moves its record to 3-0.

AUSTIN PEAY STORYLINE
  • The Spartans fell behind 1-0 in the match as the Governors took the opening set 25-22.
  • Upstate rallied back to capture the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-20, taking a 2-1 lead. The Spartans dominated offensively in the third set by hitting .310 as a team on 16 kills.
  • Austin Peay secured the final two sets 25-19 and 15-10 to win the match 3-2. The fourth set saw the Governors score nine straight points and finished the frame on an 11-5 run. Upstate got as close as one late in the fifth set but APSU earned the final two points to win the match.
STATS OF THE MATCH – AUSTIN PEAY
  • Sophomore Madison Haake led the Spartans after recording her first triple-double of the season and seventh of her career. Haake finished the match with 15 kills, 21 assists and 14 digs, as well as three service aces and three blocks.
  • Senior Emily Koelling added 10 kills on a .381 hitting percentage and joined Haake with three blocks.
  • Freshman Tamara Kaiser dished out a career-high 25 assists to lead the team.
  • A total of four Upstate players, consisting of Haake, had at least 10 digs during the match in freshman Montana Swanson (14), sophomore Callie Yeargin (13) and junior Kaleigh Kelley (10).
  • Ashley Slay had a match-high 16 kills for Austin Peay as three players totaled double-digit kills. Kristen Stucker contributed 52 assists and Allie O'Reilly 17 digs.
  • The Governors out-hit the Spartans .280 to .182 for the match, while Upstate held an 11-6 advantage in service aces. Both teams had five total blocks.
ETSU STORYLINE
  • The Spartans scored five of the first six points of the first set to lead 5-1 and was tied 18-18 midway through the frame. ETSU ended the set on a 7-3 run to win 25-21.
  • The teams traded the first 12 points of the second set until the Buccaneers scored seven straight to lead 13-6. ETSU led by as many as nine, 21-12, and recorded the last three points to take the second set 25-15.
  • The third set opened in similar fashion as the second with the scored tied at 6-6 early. Upstate took its largest lead of the set at 14-9 courtesy of an 8-3 run. The Buccaneers used an 11-1 run to take the lead for good at 20-15. ETSU would take the set 25-20.
STATS OF THE MATCH – ETSU
  • Haake recorded her second double-double of the weekend after compiling a team-best 17 assists and 14 digs. The sophomore concluded the two-day tournament with two double-doubles and one triple-double.
  • Kaiser added 10 assists while Lagaly poured in a team-high seven kills.
  • Briana Allmon led all players with a match-high 10 kills to go with a .409 hitting percentage.
  • Kristen Favre dished out 27 assists and Renzey Rice was one of three players with double-figure digs after finishing with a team-leading 14.
  • The Buccaneers out-hit the Spartans .343 to .089, and Upstate held a 46-45 advantage in digs and 7-4 in service aces.
UP NEXT
  • The Spartans open their home schedule on Tuesday evening against Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. The match is being televised on ESPN3.
  • Upstate then travels to Lynchburg, Va. next weekend to face Liberty, ETSU and Hampton at the Liberty Invitational.
