Davidson, N.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team won the Wildcat Classic on Saturday as the Spartans split a pair of matches against the Davidson Wildcats and Furman Paladins inside Belk Arena. Upstate opened the day by defeating Davidson 3-1 before falling to Furman 3-0.
The Spartans defeated the Wildcats by scores of 25-27, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23, and fell to the Paladins 18-25, 21-25, 21-25.
Upstate concluded the weekend with a 4-7 overall record, while Davidson fell to 3-6 and Furman improved to 3-6.
SPARTANS PLACE THREE ON WILDCAT CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
- The Spartans had three players named to the All-Tournament Team in Madison Haake, Callie Yeargin and Emily Koelling.
- Haake was named the Most Valuable Player of the Wildcat Classic, marking the second time in her career earning Tournament MVP honors. Haake garnered MVP accolades last year at the season-opening Charlotte Invitational.
STATS OF THE MATCH – DAVIDSON
- For the second straight match, Upstate had three players post double-doubles in the four-set victory in Yeargin, Haake and Montana Swanson. Swanson finished with 11 kills and 12 digs, Yeargin 13 kills and 11 digs, and Haake 55 assists and 17 digs.
- Haake set a new career-high in assists for the second consecutive game, and added six kills and two service aces to her effort.
- Emily Koelling recorded a career-best 18 kills and Rebecca Shearer added 13. Kaleigh Kelley contributed 28 digs.
- Mason Rooney compiled a triple-double to lead the Wildcats and Mikayla Derochie had a double-double.
- The Spartans out-hit Davidson .236 to .190 and held a 94-81 advantage in digs.
DAVIDSON STORYLINE
- Upstate trailed 8-3 early in the first set but later rallied for a 22-20 lead. The Wildcats answered to tie the frame at 24-24, sending the set into extra points. After Haake tied the score at 25-25, Davidson scored the last two points to win 27-25.
- The Spartans were down 12-9 to begin the second set. Upstate used a 10-3 run to take a 20-15 advantage, only to see the Wildcats respond back to within three at 23-20. Koelling secured the 25-21 win with her kill.
- The teams split the first 20 points of the third set until three straight put Davidson ahead 13-10. The Spartans were down by at least three for the next several plays after that. Trailing 21-17, Upstate ended the set on an 8-0 run to win 25-21, capped by Shearer's kill.
- The Wildcats jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the fourth set and later held a 14-9 cushion. The Spartans benefited from a 12-6 run to take a 21-20 lead late, highlighted by a stretch of four ties. Upstate captured three of the next four points to go in front 23-21, and held off a late rally to win 25-23 on Koelling's career-high 18th kill.
STATS OF THE MATCH – FURMAN
- Haake recorded another double-double for the Spartans as the sophomore posted a 27-assist, 10-dig effort. Haake had a double-double in all three matches during the weekend en route to being named the Tournament MVP.
- Koelling had a team-high eight kills and Kelley led all players with 15 digs.
- Annie Bierman, Ashton Stocker and Jamila Johnson each had double-doubles for the Paladins, and Taina Joseph concluded the match with 13 kills.
- Furman out-hit Upstate .325 to .202 in the match.
FURMAN STORYLINE
- The Paladins held a 5-2 lead to begin the first set but the Spartans rallied to hold a 9-8 advantage on Haake's kill. Furman broke the set open courtesy of a 9-2 run to go in front 18-11. Upstate got to within five, 22-17, late on a kill from Shearer. A Spartan service error gave the Paladins the 25-18 triumph.
- Upstate jumped ahead of Furman 10-7 to open the second set after registering six of nine points. The Paladins took the lead back at 19-17 until the Spartans evened the score two plays later at 19-19. Furman finished the set on a 6-2 run to earn the 25-21 victory.
- The Paladins held an early 9-4 lead during the third set and later extended its advantage to 19-15. Upstate answered back with a 5-2 run of its own late and were down 21-20 after a kill by Yeargin. Furman held off the Spartan rally to win 25-21 as Joseph posted the final two kills of the match.
