Boone, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team dropped its road opener Tuesday evening as the Spartans fell 3-1 in non-conference action to the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
Upstate falls to 2-2 on the season while Appalachian State improves to 1-4.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- The Mountaineers held a 12-9 advantage in shots over the Spartans including a 7-5 mark in the second half. Appalachian State also led 5-4 during a scoreless first half.
- Joel Bunting led Upstate offensively with three shots including two on-goal.
- Six other Spartans tallied one shot each while three had an attempt on-goal.
- Jordan Melia took a team-leading three shots, and two on-goal, for Appalachian State.
- Goalkeeper Davis Smith, making his second career start, grabbed two saves.
- Mountaineer goalie Jake Chasteen had four saves while earning the win.
UPSTATE GOALS
- Bunting recorded his third goal of the season, all coming in the last two games, to tie the contest in the 71st minute. Calon Minors was credited with his second assist of the year after his cross was headed by Bunting past Chasteen. (USC Upstate 1, Appalachian State 1)
APPALACHIAN STATE GOALS
- Melia gave Appalachian State a one-goal lead just as the game reached the 52nd minute of action. Daniel Avila's cross went through the 18-yard box past Smith and Melia was there for the open goal. (USC Upstate 0, Appalachian State 1)
- Just as the Spartans tied the game, Graham Smalley put the Mountaineers back in front with his goal in the 77th minute. A corner kick by Appalachian State went to the top of the box where Donovan Japp hit the ball to Smalley, who swung it by Smith into the net. (USC Upstate 1, Appalachian State 2)
- Stephen Chapman collected his first goal of the season in the 86th minute on a penalty kick. (USC Upstate 1, Appalachian State 3)
