Upstate Tops Charlotte in Five-Set Thriller

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team rallied from two-sets down Tuesday evening to defeat the Charlotte 49ers 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-17, 15-12) in an exciting five-set non-conference match inside the Hodge Center.

Upstate improves to 5-7 on the season and have won five of its last six matches. With the loss, Charlotte falls to 5-5 overall.

STATS OF THE MATCH
  • The Spartans had three players record double-doubles in Montana Swanson, Callie Yeargin and Madison Haake. Swanson tallied 11 kills and a career-high 24 digs, Yeargin had 11 kills and 14 digs, and Haake contributed 54 assists and 15 digs.
  • Emily Koelling led all players with a match-high 17 kills and Brianna Tellschow also posted a career-best 15 kills.
  • Upstate saw five players compile double-digit digs led by Swanson's 24.
  • The 49ers ended the match with three players recording double-doubles led by 13 kills and 17 digs from Molly Shaw. Mackenzie Reaume and Sofie Perrens also had double-doubles.
  • The Spartans out-hit Charlotte .186 to .182 and held a 95-90 advantage in digs.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
  • Set One:  Upstate opened the frame by scoring the first five points and led 9-1 early on a solo block by Koelling. The 49ers rallied back to one, 12-11, courtesy of a 10-3 run. The Spartans went back up by five at 19-14, but Charlotte would tie the set 22-22 after going on an 8-3 run. In total, the 49ers finished the set on an 11-4 run to win 25-23.
  • Set Two:  The teams split the first 16 points of the set and were even at 8-8 following a kill from Tellschow. Charlotte broke the frame open with a 7-2 run and led 15-10. Upstate used a 5-1 run of its own to get back to within one, 16-15, only to see the 49ers score five straight to go ahead 21-15. Charlotte concluded the set scoring the last four points for the 25-16 victory.
  • Set Three:  The 49ers led by as many as seven, 16-9, midway through the third set. The Spartans rallied with an 11-5 run to cut its deficit down to 21-20 after Haake's kill. With Charlotte leading 23-22 late, Upstate scored three of the final five points, capped by Koelling's kill, for the 26-24 triumph.
  • Set Four:  The Spartans trailed just once in the fourth set as they cruised to the 25-17 win. Leading 9-7 early, Upstate would go on an 11-4 run to go in front 20-11 after a service ace from Kaleigh Kelley. A service error by the 49ers gave the Spartans the eight-point victory.
  • Set Five:  After Upstate began the final frame with a 6-4 advantage, Charlotte answered back to tie the score at 7-7 on a Spartan attack error. The 49ers would then take a 9-7 lead before Upstate fought back to tie the set at 11-11 when Rebecca Shearer tallied a kill. The Spartans secured the win with a 5-1 run to end the set on back-to-back service errors by Charlotte to win 15-12.

  • Upstate wraps up tournament play this weekend as it participates in the Mercer Invite in Macon, Ga.
  • The Spartans are scheduled to take on Towson, Fairleigh Dickinson and Mercer during the two-day tournament.
