DeLand, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team opened ASUN play on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 road loss against the Stetson Hatters from the Athletic Training Center.
Upstate falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while Stetson improves to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- The Spartans held a 24-15 advantage over the Hatters in shots, leading 11-7 in the first half and 13-8 during the second.
- Cam Philpot led Upstate offensively with seven shots with five going on-goal. Lennart Gruetzmacher took five shots for the Spartans and Calon Minors contributed four.
- Luke Ferreira had a team-high three shots for Stetson and was one of six players with one attempt on-goal.
- Santiago Restrepo tied his career-high of four saves in net for Upstate.
- The Hatters' Paul Ladwig finished the match with 11 saves.
UPSTATE GOALS
- Morten Timm scored his second goal of the season in the 10th minute of play to even the score. Rinaldi Alphonse picked up his second assist of the year after his cross from the near side of the field made it to Timm, who had run past the Stetson defense, at the top of the 18-yard box. Timm took one touch and placed his strike past the diving Ladwig into the top-left corner of the net. (USC Upstate 1, Stetson 1)
STETSON GOALS
- Ferreira gave the Hatters the lead during the match's ninth minute of action. A misplay by the Spartan defense allowed Ferreira to gain possession of the ball far side, scoring into the open net. (USC Upstate 0, Stetson 1)
- David Caulfield netted the game-winner for the Hatters toward the end of the 72nd minute. Eyal Cohen took a free kick from the far side into a crowd of players just outside the six-yard box. Caulfield ran in front of the Upstate defense and placed his header past Restrepo left side. (USC Upstate 1, Stetson 2)
