Spartans Drop ASUN Opener to NJIT

- The USC Upstate women's soccer team took a season-high 19 shots but were unable to capitalize as NJIT defeated the Spartans 3-0 in the ASUN Conference opener at County University Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

NJIT improves to 5-4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play while Upstate falls to 0-9-2 and 0-1.

  • Upstate outshot NJIT 19-16.
  • Delaney Bussey took a career-high five shots for the Spartans, followed by Nicki Krejci with three shots. Missy Pumphrey finished with a career-high two shots, with Autumn Gore, Maddie Little and Leah Tyson also taking two shots.
  • Arianna Gerber led NJIT with five shots.
  • Karen David made eight saves for NJIT. Brooke Bailey made five saves for Upstate.

NJIT Goals

  • Nicole Baldassini found a pass from Arianna Gerber in traffic and scored her third goal of the year at 8:08 (NJIT 1, Upstate 0).
  • Carley Berdan played a ball to Kaelyn Gamel, who beat Bailey one on one to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead at 49:57 (NJIT 2, Upstate 0).
  • Alex Gilgorri stole the ball just outside the box and played it to Neema Liverpool, with Liverpool finishing her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 77:27 (NJIT 3, Upstate 0).
