Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team picked up its second straight win Tuesday evening as the Spartans earned a 3-0 victory in non-conference action over the Limestone College Saints inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
The Spartans improve to 2-6 on the season while Limestone falls to 4-2.
Upstate won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-21.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Emily Koelling led the Spartans offensively with seven kills after hitting a team-high .700 for the match. Koelling recorded her seven kills off 10 attempts and no attack errors.
- Madison Haake dished out a match-high 28 assists and Montana Swanson added 10 digs.
- Victoria Norwood had eight kills to lead the Saints.
- Mia Bergan contributed 19 assists and Taylor Berg 18 digs.
- Upstate out-hit Limestone .236 to .009, marking the second straight game with the Spartans hitting at least .200 for the match. The .009 hitting percentage posted by the Saints was the lowest turned in by an Upstate opponent this season.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One: After holding a 5-4 lead early in the opening set, the Spartans used a 9-3 run, including four consecutive points scored, to take a 14-7 advantage following a combination block by Koelling and Gloria Ikenegbu. Upstate led by at least six the rest of the way, and scored six of the final seven points to win 25-15. Koelling and Rebecca Shearer captured the set with their combination block.
- Set Two: The Spartans held Limestone to single-digits for a majority of the second set, holding a 22-7 lead at one point. Upstate began the frame on an 8-2 run after recording six straight points. The Spartans then posted a run of seven consecutive points as they extended their lead from 13-5 to 20-5. An attack error by the Saints gave Upstate the 25-11 triumph.
- Set Three: The Spartans trailed 6-2 to start the third set before rallying back with a 10-7 run to trim its deficit down to 13-12 on Callie Yeargin's service ace. Tamara Kaiser would tie the set at 15-15 with her service ace. After trading the next three points, Upstate used kills by Shearer and Brianna Tellschow to hold a 22-18 advantage. A late rally by Limestone fell short as a kill by Shearer gave the Spartans the 25-21 victory, and 3-0 match win.

- Upstate will compete in its third tournament of the season this weekend as it travels to Davidson, N.C. for the Davidson Wildcat Classic.
