First Half Goals Lift UNC Asheville over Spartans

Spartanburg, S.C. – The UNC Asheville Bulldogs scored two goals in the first 14 minutes of the match as they defeated USC Upstate 2-0 in non-conference action at County University Soccer Stadium on Thursday night. 

UNC Asheville improves to 3-4 while Upstate falls to 0-5-2. 

Stats of the Match

  • UNC Asheville outshot Upstate 13-8. The Spartans took four shots in each half.
  • Both teams had four corner kicks, with seven of the eight total corner kicks occurring in the second half.
  • Brooke Bailey made five saves for Upstate. Keller Dixon made two saves for UNC Asheville.
  • Autumn Gore led Upstate with four shots, one of which hit the post. Caroline Houser had a match-high five shots for the Bulldogs.
  • Dixon and the Bulldog defense held off a Spartan rush where the hosts hit the post and had a header sail just high of the goal during a 10-minute stretch in the second half.

UNC Asheville Goals

  • Houser took a pass from Gretchen Dettlinger and sent in a cross that bounced off of the right post and dribbled into the net in the sixth minute (UNC Asheville 1, Upstate 0). 
  • Houser sent a through ball to Paige Trent who controlled a loose ball in a one-on-one battle with Bailey and scored from 18 yards out (UNC Asheville 2, Upstate 0).
