Haake Records Triple-Double to Lead Upstate in Comeback Win at Presbyterian College

Clinton, S.C. – Madison Haake recorded her fourth triple-double of the season, while Payton Duncan added her first double-double at USC Upstate, as the Spartan volleyball team rallied from two sets down on Wednesday evening to defeat the Presbyterian College Blue Hose 3-2 at the Templeton Center.

Upstate battled back over the final three sets and won the match by scores of 23-25, 21-25, 29-27, 25-19 and 15-13.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • The Spartans held a .234 to .199 advantage over Presbyterian College in hitting percentage.
  • Upstate also led 76-63 in kills, 69-60 in assists and 88-81 in digs.
  • Haake earned her 12th career triple-double after concluding the match with 14 kills, 35 assists and 14 digs to go with a .520 hitting percentage.
  • Duncan came off the bench to collect her first double-double of the season on 11 kills and 20 digs while hitting .276.
  • Haake and Duncan were two of three Spartans to record double-digit kills in the match as Lily Dempsey finished with a team-high 18.
  • Upstate had four players, including Haake and Duncan, compile 10 or more digs as Kaleigh Kelley added 14 and Montana Swanson 13.
  • Rebecca Shearer was clutch for the Spartans down the stretch finishing with 22 assists and came close to tallying a double-double with nine digs.
  • Erin Eulitz recorded 23 kills to lead the Blue Hose offensively. Eulitz and Caroline Henderson each had double-doubles.
  • Jaclyn Brewington dished out 36 assists and Daley Gosnell had 23 digs.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

  • Set One:  The first set featured 15 ties and six lead changes with the teams splitting the opening 26 points and were tied 13-13 midway. Upstate led five times during that stretch with the last coming at 13-12 on a kill by Gloria Ikenegbu. Presbyterian College would take a 17-14 lead before the Spartans came back to tie the score at 18-18. McKenna Kirkpatrick later evened the score again at 20-20 following her kill. The Blue Hose finished the set scoring five of the last eight points to win 25-23.
  • Set Two:  The second set began in similar fashion as the first with the score tied at 11-11 after Duncan connected on a kill. Presbyterian College would go ahead 14-11 until Upstate trimmed the deficit down to one, 20-19, late on Swanson's kill. The Blue Hose scored three straight points after that and went on to the 25-21 victory.
  • Set Three:  Presbyterian College opened the third set on an 11-4 run and led by seven off a Spartan attack error. Upstate rallied back courtesy of a 12-7 run and tied the score at 18-18 on a solo block from Dempsey. Trailing 21-18, the Spartans managed to tie the score at 24-24 and force extra points. A kill by Duncan and Blue Hose attack error gave Upstate the 29-27 triumph.
  • Set Four:  The Spartan defense led the way in the fourth set limiting the PC offense to just eight kills and a .000 hitting percentage. Upstate jumped out to an early 11-3 lead with two straight Presbyterian College attack errors giving it the eight-point advantage. The Spartans would go in front by nine, 18-9, midway following Duncan's kill. The Blue Hose got as close as five points midway but Upstate made it a nine-point frame again when Ikenegbu's solo block put it ahead 23-14. Dempsey won the set for the Spartans, 25-19, with her kill.
  • Set Five:  The teams traded the first 10 points of the fifth, and final, set before Upstate registered five of the next six to lead 10-6 on a solo block from Brianna Tellschow. The Spartans led by as many as five points during the set when a PC service error gave them a 12-7 lead. The Blue Hose cut the lead down to 14-13 forcing Upstate into a timeout. Dempsey won the set, and match, for the Spartans the following play.

  • Upstate returns to the G.B. Hodge Center on Saturday afternoon to begin a five-match homestand in conference play against the NJIT Highlanders at 1 p.m.
