Spartanburg, S.C. – Hamilton Gmah scored with five seconds remaining in the first half and that proved to be the game-winner as the USC Upstate men's soccer team earned a hard fought 2-1 victory on Senior Night over the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Saturday evening at County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate improves to 3-9-2 on the season and picks up three points in conference play with a 1-4 record. Florida Gulf Coast falls to 6-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the ASUN.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Gmah and Calon Minors both scored for the Spartans over the final 27 minutes of the first half. Gmah netted his first goal of the season and Minors his second.
- Cam Philpot dished out his second assist of the season.
- Upstate held an 11-10 advantage over the Eagles in shots while both teams had five attempts on goal.
- The Spartans also led 4-3 in saves while FGCU attempted seven corner kicks to four for Upstate.
- Minors and Philpot led the Spartans with two shots each and Minors had a team-leading two shots on goal.
- Kareem Riley and Shak Adams took a team-high two shots for Florida Gulf Coast and Adams led the team with two attempts on goal.
- Dennis Zapata had one goal for the Eagles and Dylan Sacramento added one assist.
- CJ Cluck finished the match with four saves for Upstate.
- FGCU goalie Connor Gavigan grabbed three saves.
USC UPSTATE GOALS
- Minors tied the game for the Spartans at 1-1 in the 28th minute with Philpot getting the assist. Philpot's through ball allowed Minors to beat the Eagle defense and score inside the 18-yard box. (FGCU 1, USC Upstate 1)
- Gmah gave Upstate a 2-1 lead just before halftime in the 45th minute with his go-ahead goal. The initial shot by Daniel Perry was saved by Gavigan but Gmah scored on the rebound in front of the net. (FGCU 1, USC Upstate 2)
FLORIDA GULF COAST GOALS
- Zapata gave Florida Gulf Coast the early 1-0 lead in the 26th minute of play. Zapata received a pass far side from Sacramento and scored on the angle from 25 yards away.
UP NEXT
- The Spartans close out their regular season next Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. on the road against North Florida.
