Hokies Use Home Runs to Defeat Upstate

Spartanburg, S.C. – Sam Fragale hit three home runs with seven RBI as the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated USC Upstate 11-3 in the 2017 season opener at Harley Park on Friday.

Virginia Tech improves to 1-0 while Upstate drops to 0-1.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 1st – Virginia Tech pushed across three runs with two outs. Ryan Tufts reached on a double with one out, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a Nick Anderson double. Fragale hit his first home run of the game to center field for a 3-0 Hokie lead.
  • Top 2nd – Joe Freiday, Jr. led off the inning with a solo home run.
  • Top 3rd – Fragale hit a solo home run with one out
  • Top 4th – Rahiem Cooper hit a two-out solo home run
  • Top 5th – Fragale hit his final home run of the afternoon, a two-run blast to give Virginia Tech an 8-0 lead.
  • Bottom 5th – Hunter Gilbert drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Charlie Carpenter double and scored on a Brendan Brundage groundout to get Upstate on the board.
  • Top 9th – Tufts worked a leadoff walk but was retired at second on a fielder's choice. After an Anderson single put runners at the corners, Fragale tripled home two more runs. Stevie Mangrum's pinch-hit single scored Fragale.
  • Bottom 9th – Charlie Carpenter opened the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on a Brundage single before scoring on a Jake Bourke groundout. Brundage scored thanks to a Virginia Tech error.

Notables

  • Carpenter and Jordan Miller each finished with two hits.
  • J.J. Shimko went 1-for-4 with a triple.
  • Virginia Tech finished with five home runs.
  • Fragale went 5-for-5 as he finished a single short of the cycle with four runs scored and seven RBI.
  • Anderson finished with three hits while Tufts and Freiday, Jr. each had two hits.
  • Anderson, who started the game as the designated hitter, picked up the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Virginia Tech starter Packy Naughton struck out six batters while scattering four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
  • Brian Boocock was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in 1.0 innings.
  • Upstate left 15 runners on base for the game and left the bases loaded in the first inning. Virginia Tech left eight runners on base.
