Spartanburg, S.C. – Tom Stoffel's bunt single in the eighth inning broke an 8-8 tie as the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated USC Upstate 9-8 at Harley Park on Saturday afternoon.
Virginia Tech improves to 2-0 while Upstate drops to 0-2.
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 1st – Sam Fragale drove in a pair of runs thanks to a two-out single.
- Bottom 1st – Hunter Gilbert reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second on a Virginia Tech error and scored on a Brendan Brundage single.
- Top 2nd – Virginia Tech scored five runs in the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, a groundout, a two-run Upstate error and a Stevie Mangum double.
- Bottom 2nd – Russell Schwertfeger reached on a Hokie error and scored on a Devon Ortiz groundout. Charlie Carpenter drove in a pair of runs with a double and scored on a J.J. Shimko base hit.
- Bottom 3rd – Upstate pushed across three runs to take an 8-7 lead. Jordan Miller reached on a Hokie error and scored on a Drake Harris single. Schwertfeger would score thanks to an error on a failed pickoff attempted followed by a Gilbert base hit that scored Ortiz.
- Top 5th – Mangrum reached on a double with one out and scored on a Jack Owens single.
- Top 8th – Owens opened the inning with a triple. Following a strikeout and a hit batter, Stoffel laid down a bunt single to score the go-ahead run before a double play ended the inning.
