Spartanburg, S.C. – Virginia Tech scored six runs in the final four innings as the Hokies completed a weekend sweep of USC Upstate thanks to an 8-2 win at Harley Park on Sunday afternoon.
Virginia Tech improves to 3-0 while Upstate drops to 0-3.
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 3rd – Jack Owens reached on a leadoff walk and scored on a Nick Anderson single.
- Bottom 4th – Devon Ortiz led off the inning with an infield single. Ortiz advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Charlie Carpenter groundout. J.J. Shimko brought home Ortiz with a single and advanced to third on a Brendan Brundage base hit before a strikeout ended the inning.
- Top 5th – Owens led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Tom Stoffel double.
- Bottom 5th – Jordan Miller led off the inning with a single and advanced to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Drake Harris drove in Miller with a single.
- Top 6th – Joe Freiday, Jr. hit a solo home run with one out.
- Top 7th – Owens opened the inning with a single and scored on an Anderson home run.
- Top 9th – Virginia Tech scored three runs as a result of an Upstate error.

- Shimko went 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI.
- Harris went 1-for-3 with a single and RBI.
- Ortiz, Carpenter, Brundage and Hunter Gilbert each had a single.
- Owens went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and two runs scored.
- Stoffel and Anderson each drove in two runs.
- Andrew McDonald earned the win as he allowed two runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
- Paul Hall, Jr. recorded the save.
- Cory Bartholomew was charged with the loss after he allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout in 2.0 innings.
