Stetson Defeats Spartans in Home Finale

Spartanburg, S.C. – Sarah Sagerer recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Stetson Hatters defeated USC Upstate 77-55 in the Hodge Center on Monday night.

Stetson improves to 23-5 overall and 12-1 in the ASUN. Upstate drops to 9-19 and 2-11.

Playing her final game at the Hodge Center, senior Raven Jefferson led the Spartans with 17 points and four steals. Jefferson was 9-for-12 at the free throw line. DeNisha Swain scored 15 points while Coco Ritter finished with 10 points. Ritter just missed a double-double as she grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.

In addition to Sagerer, Brittney Chambers and Breana Bey finished in double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively. Mckenna Beach had five assists.

Game Breakdown

  • Upstate took a 5-2 lead as Swain got the Spartans on the board with a layup followed by a 3-pointer. Sagerer gave the visitors a 7-5 advantage after completing a three-point play at the 6:45 mark. The Hatters closed out the quarter on a 13-4 run to lead 20-9 after the first stanza.
  • Stetson pushed its lead to 28-11 following a Kennedi Colclough jumper at the 5:51 mark of the 2nd quarter. Upstate trimmed the deficit to 13 points, 28-15, thanks to a Jefferson free throw with 2:38 to play. Stetson led 36-18 at halftime.
  • A Sagerer layup gave the Hatters a 40-22 lead with 7:04 to play in the third quarter. Upstate answered with an 8-2 run to pull within 12 points, 42-30, following a Jefferson three-point play with 5:29 remaining. Stetson closed out the frame on a 13-2 run for a 55-32 advantage.
  • Sagerer pushed the Hatter lead to 57-35 on a layup with 8:49 to play in the fourth quarter. Upstate trimmed the Stetson lead to 58-40 on a pair of Brittney Delva free throws with 7:33 to play but would get no closer.

By the Numbers

  • Stetson finished 30-for-53 (56.6 percent) from the field while Upstate went 19-for-50 (38.0 percent).  
  • Upstate scored 17 points off of 17 Stetson turnovers while the Hatters converted 11 Upstate turnovers into 16 points.
  • Stetson outrebounded Upstate 38-22.
  • The Stetson bench outscored the Spartan reserves 27-10.
  • Upstate outscored Stetson 23-22 in the fourth quarter.
