Shubert's No-Hitter Highlights Doubleheader Sweep for Upstate over Furman

Greenville, S.C. – Lexi Shubert tossed the second no-hitter of her career on Wednesday as the USC Upstate softball team swept a doubleheader over the Furman Paladins by scores of 3-1 and 3-0 in non-conference action from Pepsi Stadium.

Upstate improves its winning streak to eight consecutive games and is now 11-2 on the season, while Furman falls to 4-8 overall.

GAME ONE – USC UPSTATE 3, FURMAN 1

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 5th – The Paladins took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a solo home run to center field by Kalie Hicks.
  • Top 6th – The Spartans answered back with three runs in their half of the sixth and went ahead 3-1. Ryan Rector tied the game by driving in Ansley Gilstrap with her RBI double. Karla Beasley followed the next at-bat by hitting her second home run for the season, a two-run blast, over the center field fence to put Upstate in front by two runs.
Notables
  • Holly McKinnon (5-1) picked up the win for the Spartans after tossing her fourth complete game of the season and limited Furman to just one run on one hit and one walk while registering seven strikeouts. She has now struck out seven or more batters in five of her seven starts this season.
  • Lindsey Bert (2-4) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts in six innings of work.
  • Beasley led the Spartans offensively with two RBI and was one of three players, along with Rector and Megan Obier, to record one hit. Rector also had an RBI.
  • Hicks collected the lone hit and RBI for the Paladins.
GAME TWO – USC UPSTATE 3, FURMAN 0

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 5th – Gilstrap gave Upstate a 1-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Brittany Case, who led off the inning with an infield single, scored on the play after advancing to third on Obier's single and a sacrifice bunt from Kayla Hussey.
  • Top 6th – Abbie Millete extended the lead to 2-0 with her RBI double to right center field that brought home Beasley.
  • Top 7th – The Spartans went in front 3-0 after scoring another single run in the seventh following Rector's RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Hussey scored after beginning the frame with a single, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and error.
Notables
  • Shubert (6-1) notched the second no-hitter of her career and first since April 25, 2015 in an 8-0 win in six innings against Northern Kentucky. She finished the game not allowing a walk while striking out six.
  • The no-hitter turned in by Shubert was the 26th in program history and 18th in the Division I era.
  • Emily Demonte (1-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits, no walks and one strikeout in six innings of work.
  • Seven different Upstate players concluded the game with one hit apiece, while Gilstrap, Rector and Millete all drove in one run.
