Spartanburg, S.C. – Drake Harris' one-out double in the 12th inning brought home the winning run as USC Upstate outlasted Dayton 21-20 at Harley Park on Saturday.
Upstate improves to 3-3 while Dayton drops to 1-4.
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 2nd – Dayton got on the board as Tate Hagan led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly.
- Bottom 2nd – Russell Schwertfeger reached on an error and scored on a Jordan Miller two-run home run. Charlie Carpenter brought home a run on a single with two outs.
- Top 3rd – The Flyers got a run on a sacrifice fly.
- Bottom 3rd – Brendan Brundage scored on a wild pitch.
- Top 4th - Pat Meehan drove in a run with a single followed by a two-run single by Brantley Johnson.
- Bottom 4th – Devon Ortiz reached on a free pass with two outs and scored on a Carpenter two-run home run.
- Top 5th – Dayton scored 11 runs on six hits highlighted by a Nick Ryan three-run, inside-the-park home run. Matt Poland drove in five runs in the frame thanks to a two-run double and a three-run home run.
- Bottom 5th – Upstate answered back with eight runs on five hits. Miller brought home Jake Bourke and Schwertfeger with a two-run double. Ortiz brought home a run on a single followed by a bases-loaded walk to J.J. Shimko. Brundage would clear the bases with a three-run double and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Miller.
- Bottom 6th – Hunter Gilbert opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on an Ortiz base hit. Carpenter gave Upstate a 17-16 lead thanks to a three-run home run.
- Top 8th – Dayton took an 18-17 lead thanks to a two-run double by Connor Echols.
- Bottom 8th – Upstate reclaimed the lead thanks to a pair of runs. The Spartans tied the game at 18 on a Shimko single and took a 19-18 lead thanks to a Schwertfeger infield single.
- Top 9th – Dayton forced extra innings thanks to a Meehan base hit.
- Top 12th – Takahiro Yamada opened the frame with a single and was lifted for a pinch runner. Down to his final strike, Echols lined a single to right field to score the go-ahead run. The Flyers had runners at first and second before Trey Van Der Weide got a groundout to end the inning.
- Bottom 12th – Brundage and Bourke opened the inning with walks. Following a strikeout, Miller singled to left to score Brundage for a 20-20 tie. Harris ended the game with a double down the right field line to score Bourke.
Notables
- The 21 runs scored by Upstate are the most since scoring 23 runs in a 23-6 win over Niagara on Feb. 15, 2013.
- The Spartans battled back from a 16-6 deficit for the win. On Wednesday, Upstate erased a 9-4 deficit against UNC Asheville in a 10-9 victory.
- Upstate is 2-0 in extra-inning games this season with both wins coming in the 12th inning.
- Miller's second inning home run was the first of the season for Upstate.
- Carpenter went 4-for-5 with two singles, two home runs, three runs scored and six RBI.
- Miller went 3-for-7 with a single, double, home run, run scored and six RBI.
- Ortiz went 3-for-5 with three singles.
- Gilbert scored four runs to lead the Spartans.
- Meehan led Dayton with four hits while Poland drove in six runs.
