Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team had three players each drive in a run on Wednesday afternoon as the Spartans won their second straight game over the Western Carolina Catamounts, 4-0, at Cyrill Stadium.
Upstate improves to 16-2 on the season, extending its winning streak to 13 games, while Western Carolina falls to 2-3 overall.
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first on a Brittany Case RBI single to right center field. Ryan Rector started things for Upstate with a double and scored from second on the base hit by Case.
- Bottom 3rd – The Spartans added to their lead at 3-0 in the third following a two-run frame. Megan Obier began the scoring with her RBI single to right center field and Gemma Miller followed with her first career RBI on a sacrifice bunt to third base that scored Case, who had walked earlier in the inning.
- Bottom 4th – Upstate extended its lead to 4-0 as Rector and Ansley Gilstrap executed a double steal at first and third. Rector was caught in a rundown between first and second that allowed Gilstrap to score.
Notables
- Lexi Shubert (8-1) remains unbeaten in her last nine appearances after picking up the win on Wednesday with five scoreless innings of work and allowed two walks while striking out six.
- Holly McKinnon, making her first relief appearance of the season, tossed two innings and did not allow a run or hit to go with no walks and four strikeouts.
- Shaina Reed (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits, four walks and three strikeouts in two innings of work.
- Case, Obier and Miller each had an RBI to lead the Spartans offensively.
- Five different Upstate players posted one hit during the contest in Rector, Case, Obier, Kayla Hussey and Kendsey Chappelear.
- Abigail Daniels, Madison Armstrong, Ashlyn Long, Erica Hayes and Emily Weatherman collected one hit apiece for the Catamounts.
- The Spartans held an opponent scoreless for the seventh time this season and fourth in their last eight games.
