Upstate Sweeps Lipscomb in Conference-Opening Doubleheader

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team began ASUN play on a positive note Saturday afternoon by sweeping the Lipscomb Bisons in a doubleheader with a pair of 4-1 victories, with game one going into extra innings, at Cyrill Stadium.

Upstate improves to 27-6 overall and 2-0 in the league, while Lipscomb falls to 23-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

GAME ONE – LIPSCOMB 1, USC UPSTATE 4 (8)

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 1st – The Bisons took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first on a solo home run to center field by Caitlin Plocheck.
  • Bottom 7th – Alicia Dorgan answered for the Spartans with one out in their half of the seventh by hitting her fifth home run of the season to left field and tied the game at 1-1.
  • Bottom 8th – Abbie Millete won the game for Upstate by hitting a walk-off three-run homer to center field for the 4-1 victory. Ansley Gilstrap and Ryan Rector both scored on Millete's home run, her fourth of the season, after posting back-to-back singles
Notables
  • Holly McKinnon (14-3) picked up the win after striking out 10 batters in eight innings of work while allowing one run on five hits and two walks.
  • Mandy Jordan (15-4) suffered the loss giving up four runs on seven hits, one walk and seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.
  • McKinnon registered double-digit strikeouts for the fifth time this season and is her second outing with 10 strikeouts. The senior also had 10 strikeouts on March 3 in a home win over Youngstown State.
  • Gilstrap and Millete led the Spartans offensively with two hits while Millete drove in a game-high three RBI.
  • The walk-off home run by Millete is the first of her career.
  • Destinee Brewer posted a team-best two hits for Lipscomb and Plocheck added one RBI.
GAME TWO – LIPSCOMB 1, USC UPSTATE 4

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 5th – The Bisons struck first for the second straight game to lead Upstate 1-0 when Plocheck scored after Sarah Higgins reached on an infield single.
  • Bottom 5th – The Spartans responded in the bottom-half of the fifth by plating four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Gilstrap started the scoring with her RBI bunt single to third base and Kristen Wright, pinch-running for Kayla Hussey, then scored on a double steal. Rector followed with an RBI double down the left field line and later came home when Gemma Miller was caught in a rundown between first and second.
Notables
  • Lexi Shubert (12-3) picked up the win after surrendering just one run on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.
  • McKinnon (2) closed out her day by earning the save in one scoreless inning of relief and gave up one hit while striking out two.
  • McCarley Thomas (7-5) took the loss after tossing six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
  • Gilstrap contributed a team-high two hits and drove in one run along with Rector.
  • Rector was one of six Upstate players to conclude the game with one hit.
  • Plocheck, Higgins and Chloe Yeager all had two hits apiece for Lipscomb.
