Boone, N.C. – Karla Beasley and Megan Obier combined for five hits and four RBI to help lead the USC Upstate softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Softball Stadium.
Upstate improves to 29-7 on the season while Appalachian State falls to 12-18 overall.
The Spartans earned the doubleheader sweep defeating the Mountaineers by scores of 12-1 in five innings and 4-2.
GAME ONE – USC UPSTATE 12, APPALACHIAN STATE 1 (5)
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 1st – Upstate jumped out to an early 9-0 lead over Appalachian State after plating nine runs in the first. Beasley drove in three runs during the inning and Kayla Hussey blasted a two-run homer to left field. Beasley started the scoring with her RBI single and Obier followed two batters later with a two RBI double to center field. Brittany Case added a two RBI single before the home run from Hussey. Beasley rounded out the scoring with her two RBI single to center field.
- Bottom 1st – Cara Parker cut the Spartans lead to 9-1 to begin the Mountaineers half of the first with her solo home run to left field.
- Top 4th – Upstate extended its lead to 11-1 on Alicia Dorgan's two-run homer to left field.
- Top 5th – Ryan Rector made it a 12-1 game in the fifth after her RBI single scored Kendsey Chappelear.
Notables
- Lexi Shubert (13-3) earned the win after limiting Appalachian State to just one run on three hits, no walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work.
- Annaleise Kennedy (2-5) suffered the loss throwing one-third of an inning and gave up seven runs (six earned) on five hits, one walk and no strikeouts.
- Erin Hill threw a scoreless inning of relief in place of Shubert and allowed one hit.
- The 12 runs scored by the Spartans are the second-most this season after plating 14 against Howard on Feb. 24.
- Upstate had nine runs in an inning for the second time this year after also scoring nine times in the second inning during the win over Howard.
- Beasley finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
- Dorgan, Obier, Case and Hussey each had two RBI.
- Hussey hit her first home run of the season, and second of her career, in the nine-run first inning.
- Dorgan collected her sixth home run this year in 28 at-bats and puts her one behind Beasley for tying the team-lead.
- Parker had one RBI and was one of three Appalachian State players to compile one hit.
GAME TWO – USC UPSTATE 4, APPALACHIAN STATE 2
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 1st – Ansley Gilstrap led off the game with a double down the left field line and later scored on Obier's RBI infield single to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
- Top 7th – Upstate increased its lead to 4-0 in the seventh following a three-run inning. Beasley started the scoring with her RBI double to center field and then came home when Obier reached on a fielder's choice. Dorgan added an RBI single down the left field line that brought in Rector who had reached on a Mountaineer fielding error.
- Bottom 7th – A late comeback attempt by Appalachian State came up short after scoring twice to cut the Spartans lead down to 4-2. Parker had an RBI single and scored on a double by Ally Walters. After advancing to second on the throw, Walters was thrown out at third base to end the game.
Notables
- Holly McKinnon (15-4) tossed a complete game for the Spartans and gave up two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four.
- Vanessa Ciocatto (1-6) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits, two walks and no strikeouts in just two-thirds of an inning pitched.
- Kenzie Longanecker came on in relief of Ciacatto and threw 6.1 innings while giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
- The complete game turned in by McKinnon was her team-leading 11th this season.
- Obier had a team-high two hits along with Gilstrap and Beasley, and tallied two RBI.
- Gilstrap scored two of Upstate's four runs in the finale.
- Parker and Walters both had one RBI for the Mountaineers while Parker led the team with two hits.

- The Spartans hit the road for the first time in conference play this weekend when they travel to Kennesaw State for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday against the Owls.
