Spartanburg, S.C. – Russell Schwertfeger drove in three runs with two triples as the USC Upstate baseball team defeated La Salle 7-3 at Harley Park on Wednesday afternoon. 

Upstate improves to 7-8 while La Salle drops to 1-12. 

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 2nd – Zach Wright led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Dylan Evans base hit. Wright and Evans would score on a Ryan Guckin single.
  • Bottom 2nd – Jordan Miller led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Brett Hawkins bunt single. Miller advanced to third on a double play and scored on a Devon Ortiz single.
  • Bottom 3rd – Brendan Brundage reached on a one-out triple and scored on Schwertfeger's first triple of the game. Schwertfeger would score on a groundout to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.
  • Bottom 4th – Ortiz led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Explorers. Ortiz advanced to third on a fielder's choice that allowed J.J. Shimko to reach safely. Ortiz and Shimko scored on a Schwertfeger triple, with Schwertfeger scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Top 7th – Kevin McGowan scored on a sacrifice fly.
  • Bottom 8th – Ortiz scored on a Shimko sacrifice fly.

Notables

  • Schwertfeger's two triples are the most by a Spartan in one game since Daniel Fickas had two triples against Charleston Southern on April 20, 2016.
  • Ortiz, Hawkins and Zach Krider each finished with two hits.
  • McGowan, Austin Constantini and Ben Faso each had two hits to lead La Salle.
  • Blake Whitney (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
  • Brian Boocock picked up his first save as he allowed one run on three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in four innings.
  • Jared Mattera (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
  • Upstate's current four-game winning streak is its longest of the season.
